Kinesio Taping

Developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase, the Kinesio Taping Method has taken the rehabilitation and sports medicine world by storm. With over 25 years of research and development, the Kinesio Taping Method – using the uniquely designed and patented Kinesio Tex tape – is a breakthrough in therapeutic rehabilitative taping.

The Benefits of Elastic Therapeutic Tape

Widely used at the 2008 Olympics, Kinesio Taping has established a worldwide reputation as the most trusted name in elastic therapeutic taping.

Kinesio Taping’s key differentiator is its ability to be used for the treatment of muscular disorders and lymphoedema reduction. It successfully treats a wide range of sports injuries, orthopaedic, neuromuscular, neurological and medical conditions. Examples include achilles tendonitis, hamstring injuries, haematoma and bruising, shin splints, tennis elbow and lower back pain.

Kinesio Taping enables practitioners to augment treatment of lymphoedema and chronic swelling by opening up lymphatic pathways. As the leader in taping for children, Kinesio Taping can be used for conditions such as low tone, hemiplegia and muscle imbalances. Kinesio Taping is a must-have skill for committed musculoskeletal and lymphatic practitioners and is the only taping method endorsed by Dr. Kenzo Kase.

How Does Kinesio Taping Work?

Kinesio Taping works with 4 main functions:
  • Pain – Reduces pain by taking pressure off the pain receptors.
  • Lymphatic – Eliminates lymphatic fluid/haematomas beneath the skin.
  • Joint – Adjusts mis-alignment to aid fascia and muscle function.
  • Muscle – Reconditions abnormal tension and strengthens the muscle.

The Kinesio Taping Method involves taping over and around muscles in order to assist, give support and to prevent over-contraction. This technique is fundamentally different from traditional athletic taping. It allows the practitioner to support muscles whilst maintaining full range of motion. In addition, it reduces muscle fatigue, inflammation and pain, corrects posture, adjusts joint mis-alignment and protects against further injury.

Kinesio Taping is also very effective for the treatment of lymphoedema and chronic swelling. The tape lifts the skin, increasing the space between the fascia and the muscles. This promotes the flow of lymphatic fluid, thereby helping to reduce oedema and associated swelling.

What Is Kinesio Tex Tape?

Kinesio Tex Gold with the original wave-patterned adhesive design is the highly effective elastic athletic support tape specifically designed for the Kinesio Taping Method, offering the following unique features:

  • 140% elasticity matching that of the skin. Non-restricted support allows muscles full range of motion.
  • Can be worn for 3-4 days, avoiding the need to apply every few hours.
  • 100% high grade cotton, durable, water resistant and latex-free. Channels out moisture to allow the skin to breathe.

The fascia is a sheet or band of fibrous connective tissue enveloping, separating or binding together muscles, organs and other soft tissues.

Oedema is swelling caused by an excess of watery fluid collecting in the cavities or tissues of the body.
